DESCRIPTION:Opening night reception for 'The Soul of Black Folk' art exhibition.\n\n\nJoin us for the opening of a new solo exhibition featuring artwork by Patrick Dougher. The evening will include live performances and music from DJ Jahmedicine. \nABOUT THE ARTIST \nBorn and raised in Brooklyn NY\, Patrick Dougher is a self-taught Artist\, Musician\, Poet\, Educator & Spiritual Activist. \nPatrick has played and recorded with Grammy award winners Sade\, Chuck D (Public Enemy) and Dan Zanes as well as many other notables. He is the drummer on “Dub Side as the Moon” one of the best selling Reggae LP’s of all time. \nHe has worked as a Teaching Artist in NYC public schools\, as an Art Therapist working with HIV positive children and as the Director of community arts organizations. For over 20 years Patrick has used the arts to empower and support the socio-emotional growth and health of “at-risk” and disenfranchised youth of the city. \nThrough his art Patrick seeks to inspire and to celebrate the noble beauty and divine nature of people of African descent and to connect urban African American culture to its roots in sacred African art\, spirituality and ritual.

In partnership with The Brooklyn (NY) Chapter of The Links\, Incorporated.\n\nSYNOPSIS: “Battle at Versailles” tells the story of the legendary 1973 fashion show at the Palace of Versailles that pitted the five best French fashion designers including Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Cardin against the five best American designers of the time\, Oscar de la Renta\, Bill Blass\, Anne Klein and Halston. The show transformed the fashion landscape and firmly established American fashion houses as the leaders of the fashion world. It was the first time the fashion world’s gaze was fixated on American design. This original long-form documentary is the first produced by fashion video network Made to Measure\, a new channel highlighting the people\, issues\, trends and events that have defined and transformed the world of fashion.\n\n\n

Often hailed as the “Michael Jackson of the Caribbean\,” Machel Montano has built a career spanning more than four decades\, redefining Soca music while elevating Caribbean culture onto the global stage. \nJULY 30: THE DEBUTANTES: Focusing on the first group of Black debutantes in Canton\, Ohio in a decade\, this documentary follows the young women as they unpack the ball’s legacy and chart their path forward\, both for tradition and themselves. \nAUG 6: QUEEN OF KATWE: Based on the story of Phiona Mutesi\, as told in Tim Crothers’s nonfiction book of the same name\, Nair’s kid-friendly tale of perseverance in the face of overwhelming odds is distinguished by a rare level of authenticity and even rarer absence of sentimentality—and also features a soundtrack contribution (and on-screen cameo) by a young man by the name of Zohran Mamdani. \nAUG 13: WE WANT THE FUNK!: WE WANT THE FUNK! is a syncopated voyage through the history of funk music\, spanning from African\, soul\, and early jazz roots\, to its rise into the public consciousness. Featuring James Brown’s dynamism\, the extraterrestrial funk of George Clinton’s Parliament Funkadelic\, transformed girl group Labelle\, and Fela Kuti’s Afrobeat\, the story also traces funk’s influences on both new wave and hip-hop. \nAUG 27: LOST REGGAE TAPES: A newly discovered treasure trove of tapes from Studio 17\, or Randy’s located in downtown Kingston Jamaica\, is the starting point for this remarkable story about a Chinese Jamaican family who helped create the music we now know as reggae.

DESCRIPTION:An evening of dynamic dance illustrating "Acts Of Self Preservation."\n\n\nThe Billie Holiday Theater’s ChoreoQuest: A choreographers residency program presents an evening illustrating\, “Acts Of Self Preservation.”  \n Featuring choreography by Babacar Mbaye & Tislarm Bouie. \nChoreoQuest\, under the direction of Nathan Trice\, is a choreographers residency program created 1991 in response to a dearth in affordable rehearsal space and presentational opportunities in NYC.  \nSince 1991 ChoreoQuest has supported over 45 choreographers and has maintained the goal to provide African American choreographers the opportunity to create\, develop and present new works. In return ChoreoQuest resident choreographers host master classes\, workshops\, community engagement activities and choreograph on The Billie Holiday’s Youth Arts Academy dancers.
